Lemongrass is a wonderful tasting herb used in stews and soups for zing and is only just beginning to be recognised for its medicinal properties. It lost its popularity a few years back because people were either growing the wrong variety or used chemical fertilisers which gave it bitter undertones. Organically grown West Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus) has some wonderfully delicate undertones that can be used in a lot more than just Asian dishes.
East Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon Flexuosus) has a citronella undertone and is used for teas (mixed with West Indian), pest repellent and erosion control. It’s not suitable for cooking.
At Mirum Creek we have been growing West Indian for a few years but haven’t found a market for it. While we would be happy to supply restaurants the fresh product our focus is turning to tea production with the help of Highland Herbs in Tasmania.
West Indian lemongrass stem bases are available Spring to Autumn. Bulk tea is available now.
